Top Ten Tuesday – 11. Most Intimidating Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish (click on the picture to visit their blog). A new Top Ten list is posted every week for fellow bloggers to participate in.
______________________________________________________

1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – I feel like this is one of those books you have to read before you die.  I also feel like this is one of those books that is supposed to invoke profound thought and insight and I’m worried I won’t ‘get it’.

2. The Lord Of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien – I really want to read these books because I think I would really enjoy them, but I’m worried that it will be too confusing, what with the whole other language and the similar sounding names.

3. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer – Confession time.  So I refuse to read these books because, quite frankly, I think the concept sounds ridiculous.  However there is a small part of me that is intimidated by them out of fear that I may like them and then I’ll have to disown myself.

4. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy – Let’s be honest, I would NEVER read this book, purely because it’s fracking huge!! I don’t know how you couldn’t be intimidated by that.

5. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley – This is another ‘should read’ but I’m scared to read it.

6. The Road by Cormac McCarthy – I’m intimidated by this books ability to make you super depressed.  I am super curious, but not sure I can deal with all the bad feels

7. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein – This book intimidates me because I have built it up so much.  I am uber excited to read this and am just hoping it lives up to my expectations.

8. Something Like Normal by Trish Doller – This one intimidates me because Rachel’s built it up so much and I hope I like it as much as she wants me to.

9. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green – I’ve read it.  I love it.  I want to read it over and over but each time I do I’m more nervous than the time before.  Because I know what’s about to happen.  This doesn’t stop me reading it though.

10. Anything by Shakespeare – I just don’t understand it.  I can’t get my head around the language no matter how hard I try and I feel like I should be able to do that.  Thank goodness for Wikipedia!

I think LOTR made it on a few lists! The Road is also apparently written without punctuation or grammar, I think that would be really confusing!

  1. Lord of the Rings made my list, too. I’ve tried twice to read it and I think my record was 100 pages.

I also know what you mean about The Fault in Our Stars. I’m now frightened to read the rest of John Green’s books, let alone reread this one.

    Great list!

I’m impressed with your attempt to read LOTR. Maybe next time you’ll get further into it?

TFIOS was the first John Green book I read and I was excited but scared to read others. I’ve since read Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns and while they both still have feels, it’s nothing like TFIOS. I would recommend them if your interested!

We have many of the same books on our lists. I need to read Brave New World and The Great Gatsby, they could’ve probably went on my list too!

I noticed there seemed to be a lot of the same books popping up on people’s lists. Often classics too.

      Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  3. LOL I love your reason for being intimidated by Twilight. I read it when it was still just an up and coming successful Teen book, many many years ago now, but I was surprised by how much fun it was.
    Don’t worry.
Even if you like it, I’ll still respect you. 🙂

😛 I have a few people that read it before the hype and they encourage me to read it. I just don’t think I can do it…I’ve spent too much time being negative about it. If I read it, it will have to be in secret!

  4. War & Peace is huuuuge! And so confusing! I started reading it and couldn’t finish it because there were so many characters so at one point I actually had to draw myself a character map because I couldn’t keep up. Needless to say I don’t think I’m gonna give it another go anytime soon…

    great list!

Oh goodness, any time a book needs a character map you know its going to be a stretch to finish. I’m impressed you went to the effort!
